ACADEMICS AT ADVENTIST SECONDARY TECHNICAL COLLEGE OWERRINTA
This School adheres to the Government approved academic programs for secondary school including all the subjects in the new senior school curriculum covering:
• All the pure sciences
• Applied Sciences/Vocational Subjects
• Languages: English, French and Igbo
• Trade/Entrepreneurial subjects
SPECIFIC SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS
Students in S.S.1 are expected to offer at least 15 subjects, including French, History and Further Mathematics.
Those in S.S.2 are expected to take not less than 12 subjects, including History and French up to the 3rd term.
Students in S.S.3 are advised to choose their best 9 subjects according to the SSCE Regulation.
IN JUNIOR SECONDARY OR UPPER BASIC SCHOOL
The students are taught the following subjects in preparation for the JSC/BEC Examination:
1. English, comprising English Language and Literature in English
2. Igbo, comprising Igbo Language and Literature
3. French, comprising French Language, Oral French and Literature;They are also expected to offer Mathematics, Basic Science, Social Studies, Civic Education, Introductory Technology, Physical and Health Education, Agricultural Science, Business Studies, Christian Religious Knowledge, Home Economics, Fine Arts, Computer Science, Music
IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL
The students are prepared for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council which the students take at the end of the second three years of secondary education. The Senior Secondary School students are guided by the WAEC/NECO regulations concerning the choice and number of subjects for the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination as indicated below:
SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION [SSCE]
For the award of the Senior School Certificate, candidates must enter and sit for a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine subjects. However, all candidates must compulsorily offer the following:
(a) COMPULSORY CROSS – CUTTING CORE SUBJECTS:
The compulsory cross–cutting core subjects are the first five (5) subjects. Every candidate must sit for all the subjects in this group.
The subjects are as follows:
1. Civic Education
2. Computer Studies/ICT
3. English Language
4. General Mathematics
5. One (1) subject selected from the Trade/Entrepreneurship group of thirty four (34) subjects below.
(b) FIELDS OF STUDY/SPECIALIZATION:
The fields of study/specialization are groups of subjects which will lead candidates to their various intended courses of study/specialization at the tertiary level. Candidates are to choose only three (3) or four (4) subjects from a particular group. The groups which are four (4) in number are as follows:
(i) SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS : Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Further Mathematics, Health Education, Physical Education, Physics.
(ii) BUSINESS STUDIES: Accounting, Commerce, Insurance, Office Practice, Store Management
(iii) HUMANITIES: Arabic, Christian Religious Studies (CRS), Economics, French, Geography, Government, History, Islamic Studies, Literature In English , Music, Nigerian Lanuguages: (Edo, Efik, Hausa, Ibibio, Igbo and Yoruba), Visual Arts
(iv) TECHNOLOGY: Auto-Mechanics, Basic Electricity, Building Construction, Clothing And Textiles, Electronics, Foods And Nutrition , General Metal Work, Home Management, Technical Drawing, Wood – Work
(c) TRADE/ENTREPRENEURSHIP SUBJECTS
The Trade/Entrepreneurship subjects are a group of new subjects under the five (5) compulsory cross-cutting core subjects from which candidates should choose one (1). They are as follows: Air Conditioning And Refrigeration, Animal Husbandry, Auto Body Repair And Spray Painting, Auto Electrical Work, Auto Mechanical Work, Auto Parts Merchandising, Block Laying, Brick Laying And Concrete Work, Book-Keeping, Carpentry And Joinery, Catering Craft Practice, Cosmetology, Data Processing, Dyeing And Bleaching, Electrical Installation And Maintenance Work, Fisheries, Furniture Making, Garment Making, GSM Maintenance, Leather Goods Manufacturing And Repair, Machine Wood-Working, Marketing, Mining, Painting And Decoration, Photography, Plumbing And Pipe Fitting, Printing Craft Practice, Radio, TV And Electrical Work, Salesmanship, Stenography, Store-Keeping, Textile Trade, Tourism, Upholstery, Welding And Fabrication, Engineering Craft Practice
